What exactly is a psychologist?
Psychologists study how humans think, feel, behave and interact with each other, and use cognitive and behavioural interventions to help people.
How do I know if I should see a psychologist?
If you are struggling with your thoughts, feelings, behaviours or relationships and don't know how to fix things on your own, a psychologist can help you get unstuck. Even if you're not currently facing any particular difficulties, a psychologist can help you to reach your potential and live a more fulfilling life.
What are psychiatrists, psychotherapists, counsellors and hypnotherapists?
Psychiatrists are medical specialists and treat mental illness, often by prescribing medication. The titles 'psychotherapist', 'counsellor' and 'hypnotherapist' have no legal status and they don't require any particular qualifications or accreditation.

What happens in the first session?
The first session is about dissecting the problem and making a plan to address it. I will make an assessment of your situation, work with you to set some goals and explain my approach to you, including how many sessions I recommend.
How many sessions will I need?
Psychological therapy or counselling usually lasts 6 to 10 sessions but can vary depending on your situation and your goals. This will be discussed at your first consultation and reviewed with you regularly.
Will you make me do weird stuff?
No. I only use interventions that have good scientific research to support them, and I will never make you do anything you don't want to do.
Will you prescribe me medication?
Psychologists don't prescribe medication. If you have been prescribed medication by a psychiatrist or a GP, research shows that receiving psychological therapy in addition to taking medication gets the best outcomes and reduces the likelihood of relapse.
Do I need a referral?
No. However, if you are referred by a GP or psychiatrist you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
Do you offer bulk-billing?
I don't bulk-bill, but I do offer a big discount for students and pensioners so you will only be out-of-pocket $5.20 per session when you claim the Medicare rebate.
